Board of Advisors: Rice, Allen, Bayh, Berman, Cohen, Lieberman

(Washington D.C.) The Washington Institute for Near East Policy is pleased to announce that Condoleezza Rice, John R. Allen, Evan Bayh, Howard Berman, Eliot Cohen, and Joseph Lieberman have joined its board of advisors.

"We are honored to add this distinguished group of foreign policy practitioners to our board of advisors," said Executive Director Robert Satloff. "In the face of dramatic change across the Middle East, we are fortunate to have the opportunity to draw on the experience and insight of this exemplary group to advance the work of the Institute."

The Washington Institute's board of advisors includes luminaries from government, academia, and the media. This bipartisan group of statesmen provides advice and counsel both collectively and individually to its staff and leadership.

The new board of advisors members join Henry A. Kissinger, Samuel W. Lewis, Edward Luttwak, Michael Mandelbaum, Robert McFarlane, Martin Peretz, Richard Perle, James G. Roche, George P. Shultz, R. James Woolsey, and Mortimer Zuckerman. Members also included the late Warren Christopher, Lawrence Eagleburger, Alexander Haig, and Max Kampelman.

NEW MEMBERS

Dr. Condoleezza Rice served as national security advisor and secretary of state in the George W. Bush administration. She is currently the Denning Professor in Global Business and the Economy at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business; the Thomas and Barbara Stephenson Senior Fellow on Public Policy at the Hoover Institution; and a professor of political science at Stanford University.

Gen. John R. Allen, USMC (Ret.), retired from his nearly thirty-eight-year military career after commanding the NATO International Security Assistance Force and United States Forces in Afghanistan. He is currently a distinguished fellow in the foreign policy program at the Brookings Institution. He also serves as a special advisor to Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and Secretary of State John Kerry on Middle East security issues.

Howard Berman served thirty years in the U.S. Congress, representing a district in Southern California, rising to chair the House Foreign Affairs Committee. He is currently a senior advisor at Covington & Burling LLC.

Birch Evans "Evan" Bayh III served the state of Indiana as governor and then as a U.S. senator, emerging as a leading centrist voice on intelligence and national security issues. He is currently a senior advisor at Apollo Global Management and a partner at McGuireWoods LLC.

Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut served six terms in the U.S. Senate, during which he was a national leader in homeland security and foreign policy. In 2000, he was the Democratic Party's nominee for vice president.

Eliot Cohen is the Robert E. Osgood Professor of Strategic Studies at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of the Johns Hopkins University and founding director of its Philip Merrill Center for Strategic Studies. He served in the second George W. Bush administration as counselor of the Department of State.
