Daniel R. Green Named the Ira Weiner Fellow

(Washington, D.C. -- April 10) The Washington Institute for Near East Policy is pleased to announce that Dr. Daniel R. Green has been named the Ira Weiner Fellow. At the Institute, Dr. Green will focus his research and writing on Yemen, al-Qaeda, counterinsurgency, and stability operations.

A reserve officer with the U.S. Navy, Dr. Green has served in both civilian and military leadership roles in Afghanistan, most recently as a tribal and political engagement officer in Uruzgan province. He was personally commended for his service by then-chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Peter Pace. Since 2001, he has also held several senior advisory positions dealing with the Middle East, Central Asia, and NATO/Europe in the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the U.S. Department of State.

“I am honored to be named the Ira Weiner fellow and look forward to contributing to its well-deserved reputation of excellence,” said Green.

The Ira Weiner Fellowship, made possible by a generous gift from Betty Weiner in memory of her late husband, has supported Mideast scholarship at the Institute for more than a decade.

The Weiners were among the founding trustees of The Washington Institute. In addition to their active roles serving the community of Los Angeles, they were involved in several international organizations and projects, including their work in support of the Soviet Jewry movement in the early 1970s. Mrs. Wiener was active in the Brandeis-Bardin Institute for more than twenty years, serving on its board of directors and chairing its women’s committee.
