Amarnath Amarasingam is an assistant professor in the School of Religion at Queens University, Ontario, a senior research fellow at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, and an associate fellow at the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation. He recently returned from a week in northeast Syria, including a visit to al-Hawl camp and Raqqa, the former IS "capital."
