Barry Harris, a colonel in the U.S. Army, is a visiting military fellow at The Washington Institute. He most recently served as the military executive for Central and Southwest Asia at the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency.
Prior to that assignment, Colonel Harris served in various positions while assigned to the Joint Staff's Directorate of Intelligence (J-2) from 2005 to 2007. In 2003, he was selected to be the battalion commander of the 303rd Military Intelligence Battalion (Operations), 504th Military Intelligence Brigade at Fort Hood, Texas. The following year, Colonel Harris deployed his battalion in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom II.
A native of Columbus, Georgia, Colonel Harris was raised in an Army family. After receiving his commission, he served in a series of military intelligence command positions, including at Fort Huachaca, Arizona; with the Eighty-Second Airborne Division at Fort Bragg; the Sixty-Sixth Military Intelligence Brigade in Germany; the 501st Military Intelligence Brigade in South Korea; and Joint Forces Command in Norfolk, Virginia.
