Lt Gen (Ret.) David Deptula is dean of the Mitchell Institute of Aerospace Studies. During thirty-four years of service in the U.S. Air Force, he was the principal air campaign planner for Operation Desert Storm (1991), commanded no-fly zone operations over northern Iraq (1998-99), oversaw air operations in Afghanistan after the 9/11 terrorist attacks (2001), and helped shape U.S. doctrine regarding the use of drones for reconnaissance and surveillance.
