Maj. Gen. Doron Almog, a 2003 Visiting Military Fellow at The Washington Institute, began his distinguished service in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in 1969. Throughout a military career that has spanned four wars, he gained extensive experience in combat and special clandestine operations in the ongoing fight against terrorism, including the dramatic July 1976 rescue of Israeli hostages in Entebbe, Uganda.
In 1993, General Almog commanded IDF forces in Gaza tasked with fighting Palestinian terrorism while simultaneously withdrawing from approximately 80 percent of that territory. In 2000-2003, he served as head of the IDF’sSouthern Command, conducting a campaign against terrorism that combined defensive and offensive operations stretching across the entire Gaza Strip. Under his command, Southern Command achieved an unprecedented level of containment, preventing every attempted terrorist breach of the security barrier surrounding Gaza.
