On June 27, 2007, Shafeeq Ghabra and Amy Hawthorne addressed The Washington Institute's Special Policy Forum. Shafeeq Ghabra is founder and president of the Jusoor Arabiya consultancy and former president of the American University of Kuwait. From 1998 to 2002, he served as director of the Kuwait Information Office in Washington, D.C. His extensive experience with political issues and educational reform has made him a frequent commentator on television and radio programs (including his own popular weekly talk show on Kuwait TV) as well as a regular lecturer at scores of universities, think tanks, and associations. He is the author, with Margreet Arnold, of the Washington Institute Policy Focus Studying the American Way: An Assessment of American-Style Higher Education in Arab Countries. Amy Hawthorne was appointed as the Founding Director of the International Center for Middle Eastern-Western Dialogue in January 2006. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, where she served on the Task Force on U.S. Policy toward Arab Reform. Previously, she was an associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, where she studied democracy in the Arab world and was the founding editor of the Arab Reform Bulletin.
