Homegrown radicalization is on the rise inside the United States. Americans have gone overseas to wage jihad, while a string of terrorists have recently been sent from abroad to attack Americans here at home, ranging from Najibullah Zazi's plot targeting New York City, to the Christmas Day bombing attempt, to the near miss in Times Square.
On June 14, 2010, The Washington Institute's Lafer Symposium in New York City brought together Juan Zarate, Daniel Freedman, and Matthew Levitt to discuss the changing face of the jihadist threat and the Obama administration's responses to that threat.
Juan Zarate was deputy national security advisor for combating terrorism from 2005 to 2009. He is now a national security commentator for CBS News and a senior advisor at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
Daniel Freedman is director of strategy and policy analysis at the Soufan Group LLC, an international consultancy for security and risk management.
Matthew Levitt is a senior fellow and director of the Stein Program on Counterterrorism and Intelligence at The Washington Institute.
