On October 14, 2009, The Washington Institute honored former president William Jefferson Clinton with its 2009 Scholar-Statesman Award at a gala dinner in New York City.
Following President Clinton's remarks, attendees enjoyed a special "ask the experts" discussion moderated by Institute executive director Robert Satloff. Senior fellows and panelists Soner Cagaptay, Patrick Clawson, John Hannah, and Matthew Levitt touched on a range of pressing issues in U.S. Middle East policy, including counterterrorism, radicalization, and Iranian politics and nuclearization.
Soner Cagaptay is a senior fellow and director of the Turkish Research Program at The Washington Institute. He also serves as chair of the Turkey Program at the State Department's Foreign Service Institute and as an assistant professor at Georgetown University. His publications include Secularism and Foreign Policy in Turkey: New Elections, Troubling Trends (2007) and Islam, Secularism, and Nationalism in Modern Turkey: Who Is a Turk? (2006).
Patrick Clawson is deputy director for research at The Washington Institute. An economist who focuses on Iran, he served previously as a senior research professor at the National Defense University's Institute for National Strategic Studies and as a research economist at the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. His most recent publications include two Washington Institute studies coauthored or coedited with Michael Eisenstadt: The Last Resort: Consequences of Preventive Military Action against Iran (2008) and Deterring the Ayatollahs: Complications in Applying Cold War Strategy to Iran (2007).
John Hannah is a senior fellow at The Washington Institute, focusing on U.S. Middle East strategy. A senior foreign policy practitioner in both Republican and Democratic administrations, he served most recently as national security advisor to Vice President Richard Cheney.
Matthew Levitt is a senior fellow and director of the Stein Program on Counterterrorism and Intelligence at The Washington Institute. Previously, he served as deputy assistant secretary for intelligence and analysis at the Department of the Treasury. He is the author of Negotiating Under Fire: Preserving Peace Talks in the Face of Terror Attacks (2008) and Hamas: Politics, Charity, and Terrorism in the Service of Jihad (2006).
